Matthew 6:2-4 Is Charity a Waste?

When we come to church, we approach it with the attitude, “Well, do I have to give? No, I don’t have to give, so I won’t.” That’s basically how the logic goes. But turn the question around: do I have to perform mercy?

Matthew 5:43-48 - Like Father, Like Son. Loving Your Enemies, Part 1

Being able to understand God's Word requires a correct understanding of who God is. Contrary to what the Pharisees and Religious leaders of Jesus' day believed and taught, God is not a cosmic policeman looking to punish every offense at the first opportunity. God is a Father, and His Law must be understood and interpreted in that light. In this sermon, Pastor Josh shows that in order to love we must be sons of our Father, but in order to be sons of our Father, we must first understand who our Father is.

Matthew 5:38-42 Turning the Other Cheek

The Christian should never retaliate to injustices inflicted upon Him, but should always leave vengeance in the hands of God. But how does one realistically do this?
Matthew 5:6 Starving For Righteousness

Christ promises us that if we are hungry for righteousness, if we long to be able to claim access to the presence of God through personal holiness and righteousness, then we will be given our fill! What does Christ mean by this statement? How can we ever get enough righteousness? How could our appetite for personal holiness in the sight of God ever be fully satisfied?!? From where does this gift of righteousness come? How do we get it? How can we have it? What does this mean for our future?

Me? Meek? You go and meek it out!

There is a logical order to Christ's teaching. He starts with the imperative of becoming a spiritual beggar. He proceeds to mourning. And now He continues to meekness. But what does it mean to be meek? What does Christ mean by this statement? How can we live lives of meekness when we are called to boldly proclaim the Gospel as the only way to salvation? What does a meek person look like? How does he live?

If you want to be happy, you have to be poor in spirit.

We all want to be happy. Whatever else we may want out of life, the common thread that drives it all is the desire to be happy. Jesus teaches us that true happiness is grounded in mourning. What does this mean? This seems paradoxical, if not out-right contradictory: happiness is tied to sorrow?

Matthew 4:23-25 Answering the Call: Hope is Waiting

A show will draw a crowd, and the larger and more spectacular the show then the larger and more spectacular the crowd. And the show Jesus put on drew the largest of all known crowds at this point in history! But the closer you look at Jesus' ministry the more you will find that His show really begins with an opening act, a message far more cutting then the hurts that He healed. What did He say? What was His message?

Answering the Call: The Call of the Kingdom

Sometimes it's time to move on. There are times when you've worn out your welcome, and it is time to call it quits and go home. We read about such an encounter in Matthew 4:12-13. When John the Baptist gets arrested for his preaching, Jesus decides that his time is done, and he needs to go back home.

But this sounds a bit unusual, doesn't it? After fending off the best attacks of Satan, Jesus gets nervous about the Baptist's being imprisoned? Where Satan failed the cops actually suceeded? Where Satan was unable to intimidate Jesus, the local police manage to sufficiently cow the Lord Jesus so that he decides to pack up his stuff and head home?

By now, I'm sure you realize that there is always a method to the Lord's (seeming) madness. So what is the Lord doing by moving north in the wake of the Baptist's arrest? What does the prophecy from Isaiah 9 say about this? And what is the deeper significance of this for you and me today? The God of mysteries, puzzles, and adventure is calling. Are you going to answer the phone?

Perverted Worship: When Fans Get Freaky

We all have those things which we treasure, and love. We love to see our kids do well, we love to see our communities thrive, and we all want to see the hometown team win. We're fans, and we desire to see our favorites succeed.

As Christians who love and worship the one true God, the desire to see God's "Kingdom come, [His] will be done," is a good thing. But be careful. This is another area that Satan loves to attack. He will pounce on your love for God and attempt to turn your worship into something sinister. Perverted worship can lead Christians down dangerous paths and even lead them to engage in activities for the 'sake of Christ's kingdom' that may bring shame to the God of the universe.

Jesus was faced with just such a temptation in Matthew 4. How did he overcome? How did He defend himself against Satan's tricks?

We have much to learn from this encounter. Find out more, as we continue our three week series on conquering temptation and spiritual warfare, looking at Matthew 4:8-11.

Satan Craves Your Torture

This past weekend we learned that acclaimed vocalist and singer Whitney Houston passed away tragically and before her time. Many will hear accounts of prescription drug abuse and conclude that Whitney's death, though tragic, is nothing but a cautionary tale to be considered and learned. The lessons learned will be these: 1.) Don't get caught up in a glitzy lifestyle of partying and rampant intoxication. 2.) Don't do drugs. Or 3.) If slightly intoxicated or reeling from prescription drug abuse, don't take a bath unsupervised.

There is truth to all of these lessons, and undoubtedly Whitney's life illustrates the dangers of glutton and wanton partying. But Whitney Houston's death, beyond being a cautionary tale, also speaks to a more sinister reality. There is a monster that prowls among humanity seeking to kill us in the worst ways possible. He seeks to tempt us, allure us to deceptive pleasures, and then enslave us to those pleasures becoming mastered by them. It is his wicked hope that he might have the pleasure of watching us violently thrash about in agony completely bound to the addiction and then die slowly, painfully. He respects and fears no one. He is not bound by the physical laws of our universe. He is a spiritual entity who was at one time the capstone and signet of perfection over all creation. He hates you. He wants to murder you. He wants you to suffer in Hell. He is real. His name is Satan.

Our Lord engaged Satan in spiritual combat shortly following His baptism. Satan was soundly defeated. We have much to learn from this encounter.

Fulfill All Righteousness

ohn the Baptist, the greatest of all ordinary men born on this earth, did not want to baptize Jesus. You can just hear the objections: "I'm not righteous enough. I am still a sinner. You are perfect, holy, pure! Who am I that you should want me to do this? I'm a nobody! Besides, I sprained my ankle last week walking in the wilderness... So, I'm not really up to this... you know?"

This was all perfectly true. Except for the part about the sprained ankle. But everything else was perfectly true- John wasn't holy enough, wasn't righteous enough, wasn't fit to properly baptize somebody like the King of the Universe, namely Jesus. But God insisted: "No, no. Stop objecting to this. Just do it."

Why? What's the reason behind it? What does it mean, "...to fulfill all righteousness?"

Baptized in Spirit and Fire

We've seen the Baptism of John the Baptist in Matthew 3, but what about Jesus' Baptism? If John Baptizes with water for the sake of repentance, then what is the difference between John's baptism and Jesus' baptism? What is Jesus doing and why? What difference does it make, and how does it change the way that we live?

How do you make a tree grow fruit?

Whenever you plant a fruit tree, it is only natural to expect that after the tree matures you should be able to collect the fruit. But what happens when the tree refuses to produce? How do you make a barren tree produce the appropriate fruit? If a tree refuses to produce fruit is this indicative of a deeper issue with the tree or is the tree just lazy? Obviously, a tree that does not produce fruit must be struggling with one of three issues:
1. It isn't getting enough nutrients and water.
2. It is diseases in some manner and needs further diagnosis and treatment.
3. It might not be a fruit tree!

So here's a good question: are you a true Christian? Does you walk in life bear the fruit that one expects to find from someone who is walking closely with God? What kind of fruit should we be looking for? Find out the answer to these questions and more as we look at Matthew 3:7-10.

Can God Get to You?

I'm sure there are many among us, not just unbelievers but maybe even a few who do have a relationship with God, who would rather not hear from Him. We tend to cling to subtle forms of sin, holding tightly to our small rebellions, thinking all along that we can grab ahold of God when we need Him. But there's a huge assumption in all of this: what if it doesn't work like that? We know that God loves us and wants to be involved in our lives, molding our characters for our own benefit -but what if, despite His desire to draw near to our hearts, we've built barriers and obstructed His path, making it difficult for Him to find us?

What do you suppose John the Baptist means when he cries out: "Prepare the way of the Lord?" Find out as we look at Matthew 3:1-6.

The King's Pedigree

Did you know that many orthodox Jews are still waiting and searching expectantly for the coming King? Other Jewish believers have given up their search for the coming king or Messiah, but still wait expectantly for something to happen! Yet fewer still reinterpret much of the Old Testament in order to understand the nation of Israel as the promised Messiah. But all of this stems from looking at the promises made by God and then not finding the King to whom those promises relate.

I imagine it would be very difficult to scruitinize the men of the past or present and try to determine who should be the King. It could all be rather random or arbitrary. One man's opion could be just as good as another man's best guess. Or could it? What if there was same way to establish the exact King. Did you know that God has actually done this? Join us as we examine Jesus' Pedigree and what this means for us, and Jews, and everyone in today's world!

With great pomp and cirucumstance these illuminaries take their places among us with airs of near worship. Any time a great person enters the room it is done with much fanfare: the call of the trumpet, the rolling out of the red carpet, the courtisans who preceed. I imagine that it is no easy task to proclaim the arrival of royalty. If you were tasked with announcing the arrival of a king, how would you do it? What types of things would you take into consideration?

Matthew, man not too different from us, undertook to announce the arrival of a king to his fellow countrymen. Do you know how he began this announcement? With a family tree! Verse one begins, "The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ..." Why do you suppose he began with a family tree? What sorts of preliminaries was Matthew trying to get out of the way? He mentions some sordid family records in the process. Why did he do this? What was his purpose in all this?
